 Why We Love May

Student Testimonials

May Center has been the basis of where I’ve learned all of my essential skills for school. It helps kids who have never gotten help in their life, and it gives them a foundation so that they can go on. It gives people so much and teaches them so much, so that they can really blossom in life.”

— May School Student, Age 12

You don’t have to worry because the teachers will always meet you at your level.”

— May School Student, Age 14

It’s a great school and I feel like you’re going to like it.”

Faculty & Staff Testimonials

Trying to learn and then mastering a skill that has historically been almost impossible, truly requires bravery and daily dedication. Many of us don’t remember how we learned to read and many of us remember each painful step. At May Center each step is highly supported in an engaging and encouraging environment by teachers and staff who truly love this lifesaving work. I love what I do and I love doing it here at May Center.

— Jamie Shannon, School Counselor

Coaching is a powerful tool to empower educators as they build their teaching toolbox and implement structured literacy practices to support positive literacy outcomes. As a structured literacy specialist, I have had the privilege of working closely with the dedicated educators at Pablo Roybal Elementary School in a coaching partnership. Together, we have used data to identify student needs, shape instructional choices, and implement high-leverage practices for meaningful student growth. With students at the center, this collaboration fosters intentional, responsive teaching and cultivates a culture of continuous growth in literacy instruction and learning. Onward!

— Erin Brown, May Way Literacy Coach

I am so grateful to be a new part of the dynamic learning community of May Center. The staff all have incredible expertise and yet continue to be eager lifelong learners. It is a joy to work with small groups of students so that they can be individually supported according to their needs and interests.

Dyslexia Specialist Cohort Testimonials

The Dyslexia Specialist Training with May Center has significantly deepened my awareness of the diverse ways dyslexia manifests in the classroom. It provided me with practical strategies and interventions, such as multisensory approaches, while also increasing my understanding of the cognitive load my students experience. This training has made me a more informed and responsive educator, empowering me to create a more inclusive learning environment for all students.

— Alum, Winter/Spring 2023 Cohort

As a teacher who has undergone Dyslexia Specialist Training through May Center, I've witnessed a profound positive impact on my ability to support students with dyslexia. The training has equipped me with a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by these students, as well as effective strategies to address them. It has been incredibly rewarding to see the positive impact that this effective instruction has had on my students with dyslexia.

— Alum, Summer 2022 Cohort

I just wanted to say one last thank you for your virtual dyslexia trainings. I became a CALP a few weeks ago, and I never would have set down that path if it hadn’t been for you, your school, and the virtual opportunity you offered me. I will always appreciate this. I am now officially the Dyslexia Lead for my district.
