A Message From Amy Miller

Dear May Center Friends and Families,

A decade has passed since I sent May Center co-founder Karen Lindeen an email titled “super-secret thoughts” that sketched out some initial ideas for a new “learning center” in Santa Fe. The following description of the learning center is contained within that initial document:

Through authentic partnerships with families, community members, and the public sector, the learning center will support the well-being and education of all stakeholders, including the community as a whole. In this way, our students and the educational community of New Mexico will be encouraged to take ownership of their learning experiences, their responsibilities toward themselves and the community around them.

I am proud that May Center continues to strive for this vision today. What began as a tutoring half-day program serving 12 students has strategically grown to access and impact students with learning differences throughout the state of New Mexico. Last year alone, May Center provided direct services to over 250 students and professional development services to 17,000 teachers around the state.

Our school, tutoring and summer programs in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, Evaluation Center, and Teacher Institute all provide different access points for students and teachers statewide. While we could not know all of the challenges and rewards of launching a new venture when we began, our focus on community and collaboration has remained constant and has allowed May Center to find its place as an essential education change-maker in New Mexico.

Sincerely,
Amy Miller
