Playground Dedication

Members of both the May Center and St. John’s United Methodist Church communities came together this Friday to dedicate the new playground.

Beforehand, students contemplated what it means to dedicate something, while the ceremony itself included a rousing version of Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes … popsicles … and, of course, playing on the playground.

Thank you to Pastor Matt for leading us in song … and to all the folks at St. John’s who collaborated with May Center to make this new playground equipment a reality.

Ten Year Anniversary Performance

A special note for May School Intermediate Parents

We are so excited to celebrate our 10 year anniversary on May 10. As part of this event, all of our Intermediate students are invited to participate in a brief performance. This performance will include lines from poetry the students wrote earlier this year, and will include both current May Center students and alumni. Your children's poems are insightful, wise, funny, and touching, and we can't wait to share them with you.

We would like students to commit to participating in the performance so that we know how many students to expect and we can plan rehearsals accordingly. If your child participates, they will be expected to attend the following rehearsals in addition to the performance. All family members of student performers are welcome to attend the performance free of charge. We hope that you will stay for dinner after the performance. To purchase tickets for the dinner, please visit www.tickettailor.com/events/maycenterforlearning/662794.

Ghost Ranch

Students in Mr. Scott’s and Ms. Gabriella’s classes visited Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu this week. See the photos below and read the highlights from Mr. Scott and students….

On our trip to Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu this week, the students were able to experience one of the most beautiful places on earth. We went on a 45-minute hike towards the famous Chimney Rock formation on the ranch. We had views of the picturesque valley and Abiquiu Lake below.

Students took a guided tour of The Ruth Hall Museum of Paleontology and the Florence Hawley Museum of Anthropology. They learned about the small tribes that inhabited the area and about their trials and tribulation in doing so through an extensive display of artifacts. They were able to see first hand what it takes to retrieve millions of years old fossils from rock.

We also learned about many of the creatures that once roamed the valley through the wonderful displays of fossils and living models. The students also got to throw an arrow with an atlatl, giving them insight as to how hard hunting must have been for the tribes that used them.

—Mr. Scott

I liked the Dinosaur Museum because I got to hold a dinosaur bone. I got to get up close to the huge plaster mold that holds the rock and bones they are discovering. I also got to learn what it takes to become a paleontologist.

I liked learning about a new species of dinosaur that I have never seen before. The hike was also interesting because the landscape is very pretty and unique.

I enjoyed using the atlatl, because it was an interesting thing to do and a way to see how ancient people used to hunt. Maxton was the best at first but then people started to get a hang of it and they were doing really well. There were these ones with side railings and they worked a lot better than the ones without. I was surprised how far we could throw the arrows with a stick.
